We test the flow
Once the debris has been cleared, we use water to test the system.
We watch the gutter and downspout to see whether water is moving freely from the top to the discharge point.
If the water flows properly, great.
If it slows, backs up, or doesn’t come through as it should, we know there’s still something to investigate.

Where does your downspout water go?
The bottom of the downspout matters, too.
Ideally, water should be directed away from your foundation through an appropriate extension, splash block, or drainage connection.
On a lot of Saanich properties the downspout ties into an underground perimeter drain, and everything past that connection is out of sight from the roof.
Some older homes have downspouts that simply discharge close to the foundation. If we notice something like that while we’re working, we’ll point it out.

How do I know if my downspout is blocked?

Sometimes there are no obvious signs until the system is tested.
How do you clear a blocked downspout?
We first determine where the blockage is and whether it can be safely accessed.
Depending on the situation, we may clear debris manually or use water and appropriate equipment to help break through the blockage. We then test the flow again to make sure the water is moving properly.
Do you clean downspout elbows?
Yes.
Elbows are common places for leaves, needles, and other debris to collect. We check accessible elbows and connections when cleaning and clearing the downspout system.
Why is my gutter overflowing when the gutter itself looks clean?
A blocked or restricted downspout may be the reason.
Water can enter the gutter normally but have nowhere to go once it reaches the outlet. Testing the downspout flow helps determine whether the problem is further down the drainage path.
Do you flush downspouts with water?
Yes.
Water flushing helps clear loose debris and, just as importantly, lets us test whether the downspout is actually flowing properly.
Can you clear a completely blocked downspout?
Often, yes.
The approach depends on where the blockage is, how severe it is, and how accessible the downspout and drainage connection are.

Where should a downspout discharge water?
